Freedom Call
Master Of Light
March 2017
Released: 2016, Steamhammer
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Waspman

The happiest power metal band in the world, Freedom Call, returned in late 2016 with their 9th studio album, MASTER OF LIGHT. We here at Metal Rules have been big supports of the band right from the start and have reviewed all of their previous work so let’s get to it.

The album kicks off with a trademark anthem: “Metal is for Everyone” just kicks ass immediately with bouncy rhythms and sing-along lyrics; it’s classic Freedom Call. It also has a hilarious video – check it out on YouTube. Back to the album and it carries on with “Hammer of the Gods” which is a more aggressive song that still retains the band’s well-known sense of inclusiveness and fun. After just two songs, it’s obvious that Chris Bay and co. are not going to reinvent their musical wheel on this album and that’s OK – Freedom Call do what they do and are damn good at it.

In fact, I would argue that MASTER OF LIGHT is one of the band’s strongest albums ever! There’s only one ballad (“Cradle of Angels”) and it’s quite possibly the best they’ve ever done. Normally I find their ballads easy to skip, but I find myself quite happy to sit through this one. The rest of the album shows how adept the band is at both leading the party sing-along (“Rock the Nation”) and flat-out kicking ass (“Riders in the Sky”). Their musicianship is flawless and Bay can still hit all the high notes; what’s not to love?

If you’ve ever enjoyed Freedom Call’s brand of power metal, I guarantee you will find something to love on MASTER OF LIGHT. This is the sound of a band that loves what they do and want to take everyone along for the ride – enjoy!
