Building The Machine
Released: 2001, SPV / Steamhammer Records
For many years Hughes played bass in Deep Purple mark III (w/David Coverdale on vocals) but has had a successful solo career overseas for many years. This is the first solo disc I've heard from Glenn and BUIlDING THE MACHINE offers up 11 tracks of funk/blues/rock of superb vocal quality. There's a cover of DEEP PURPLE'S "Highball Shooter" that just smokes, along with a cover of RARAE EARTH's "Celebrate" which just bleeds with soulful vocals. "Out On Me" is just straight ahead rock-n-roll that has an uncanny resemblance to THUNDER or the BLACK CROWES. "Feels Like Home" is where Hughes' vocals shine in a different light, backed only by an acoustic guitar and building up to a powerful finish. It baffles me why he isn't more popular with AOR radio. A strong release from a voice to be reckoned with.
