Graham Bonnet Band
The Book
February 2017
Released: 2016, Frontiers Records
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Graham Bonnet has definitely been through the rock n’ roll ringers. Whether it’s his solo work, his “rock” work (Rainbow, Blackthorne etc.), or his “metal” stuff (MSG, Alcatrazz, Impellitteri etc.), the man has done it all in his nearly 50-year career. He’d been relatively quiet in the last ten years or so, but in 2016 he assembled a whole new band and unleashed THE BOOK.

For those that thought Bonnet might be mellowing out at age 69, forget it. THE BOOK is as heavy as nearly anything Bonnet’s done in his illustrious career. The trademark melodic songs are there, of course, but guitarist Conrado Pesinato’s riffs are fiery as hell and insanely catchy to boot! I don’t know much about this guy, but he is an incredible find and hopefully his partnership with Bonnet lasts for a while.

But back to THE BOOK. All eleven songs are sublime hard rockers at all speeds and moods. “Into the Night” kicks the album off in up-tempo fashion, while on the other end of the spectrum, “The Dance” slows down into ballad territory and let’s Bonnet’s astonishing vocals steal the show. There’s something for all of Bonnet’s fans here and he’s clearly tried to encompass the many facets of his career in one book, so to speak. It’s all topped off by one of the best rock songs of 2016, “California Air”; a song that I’ve been playing the heck out of for months.

As if a nearly- perfect album wasn’t enough, Bonnet saw fit to include a whole second CD of re-recorded favorites throughout his career. There are cuts from his solo work, Rainbow, Alcatrazz, MSG, and Impellitteri included – 16 in all. It’s great to relive these old nuggets and where most bands try and sell a “re-recordings” album all on its own, Bonnet just gives you a whole extra album along with THE BOOK. Killer.

Much like another album I reviewed this month, Glenn Hughes’ RESONATE, THE BOOK would have been in my “Best of 2016” list had I heard it in time – it would have made my Top 10! What a fantastic album that accomplishes the rare feat of reminding everyone about one of the best vocalists around while at the same time introducing a wonderful new guitar talent.
