Nocturnal Rites
October 2017
Released: 2017, AFM
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: John Haseltine

Lindqvist and Co. are back with a superb album. The Swedish melodic metal masters unleash their 9th studio effort. And this should be one that pleases the fans of old. PHOENIX is a true return to form for Nocturnal Rites. Well, the power metal side, not their original death metal style when they first formed back in 1990.

Nocturnal Rite released somewhat of a disappointment when they released THE 8TH SIN back in 2007. It was a vision they didn’t totally see through and it upset many fans around the globe and was a album that also did not receive the best press. That changes a lot with this one. Sonically, they come at you like they did in the early 2000’s when I first came across them. Each track is very well performed melodic to a bit edgier power metal that has all the melodies and catchy hooks that gained the band worldwide recognition in the first place.

PHOENIX has a nice mix of a couple more melodic, almost orchestral style metal tracks as well as some more aggressive ones that give this release a perfect mix of what this powerhouse of a band has to offer. PHOENIX just may be the comeback album of the year. Check it out!
