Wasting no time in following up last year’s sleeper hit STAND IN THE FIRE, Edmonton’s Striker have returned almost 12 months to the day with their fifth and self-titled full length, STRIKER. A less balls out, more aggressive record than its predecessor, STRIKER delivers another impressive collection of high energy headbangers.

Compared to the campy, neon glow of the Sunset Strip that shone across STAND IN THE FIRE, STRIKER is a more consciously straightforward metal record. Make no mistake, there are still plenty of big hooks and sing-a-longs, but tunes like the speed metal infused “Over the Top” and “Curse of the Dead” recalls older material a la ARMED TO THE TEETH and CITY OF GOLD, while the mosh stomp of “Pass Me By” explores still yet heavier terrain for the band. The band has plenty of fun within this framework, lobbing shredding licks against layers of escalating vocal lines, and counterbalanced by s a set of grounded, heads down crunch riffs.

But man, it’s the anthemic fist pumpers that Striker really excels at. The opening “Former Glory” exhibits a mild restraint, allowing the attention to center on the vocal textures and the squealing lead guitar work, “Freedom Call” exudes some a Maiden-like flirtations, and “Born to Lose” may be the band’s new official theme song. “Born to Lose, but I’m Living to Win” may be a bit cliché, but it’s true enough for these would be underdogs.

Regardless of what your heavy metal predilections may be, STRIKER offers something for everyone. Super catchy tunes dripping with shred gymnastics and all around technical prowess, Striker deserves a place on any metal fan’s playlist.
