Aldaria
Land Of Light
April 2017
Released: 2017, Pride And Joy
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: JP

Across the mists of time, buried deep in the ancient mountain vaults there is an arcane tome, a scripture of steel, penned by the wise elders of long ago. Within it’s dusty pages it contains the rules of Heavy Metal. Buried there for centuries it explains the laws of Metal and written there in the dusty pages, carwfully inscribed in spidery script it says the following….

“If thou are a European solo artist who has a overblown, symphonic Power Metal concept album with multiple guest stars, the name of your band must start with the letter ‘A’. So it is written, so it shall be done.”

Fortunately Frode Hove (Memorized Dreams) has made the quest and has found and read the book of Heavy Metal and he has obeyed this ancient and unbreakable law. He has chosen his band name wisely. There is Ayreon, Aina, Avantasia, Avalon, Archangel, and now…Aldaria!

On a side note: Actually there are lots of others bands in this style that don’t start with the letter ‘A’ but I still think it is cool name that stays with a new trend I noticed of using the letter ‘A'

All joking aside, Aldaria is the new project of Frode and he has released his debut LAND OF LIGHT. Basically this is Memorized Dreams, as pretty much everyone in that great band is in Aldaria. Frode has a ton of guest stars…lets list all of them because everyone (except Metallica) loves reading a long list.

So right there, if you are a Power Metal fan, there are 50 good reasons to buy this album.

LAND OF LIGHT is as expected a concept album. The story set in 1247 AD is available on the bands website for those of you who care to follow it. I found it quite interesting myself. This album is just so good on every level if you like this stuff. I do, and I find a storyline adds so much more to an album; it makes something so big and hard to grasp more tangible. If you are familiar with any of the multi-artist projects in this style then you will like this. It is flawless in execution. It’s fun to say, “Oh that’s’ (insert vocalist name here) singing on this track! Cool! You can hear a great Kiske-era Helloween influence across this record, especially on little bits of songs ‘Test Of Time’. LAND OF LIGHT has all the elements you want and need in a concept album; tender piano ballads, raging double-kick drums, huge choirs, symphonies, fingers flying everywhere with not a smattering of grit of grime anywhere, sonically or lyrically. It’s so clean and pure it would make a Death Metal fan puke at 20 paces.

I’ve made a lot of silly jokes and poor attempts at humour in this album review, but Aldaria and LAND OF LIGHT is no joke. It is a superb album in everyway and although it is only April, it is already way up high on my lists of top albums of the year. It can easily stand side-by-side, shoulder to shoulder with concept albums written by the giants of the sub-genre.

PS. If you didn’t understand my earlier Metallica reference/joke, go read the liner notes to Metallica’s…AND JUSTICE FOR ALL”.
