Machine Gun Reaper
April 2017
Released: 2017, Austenitized Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Robert Williams

From the second I saw the cover for the new Ophicvs (pronounced OH-FEE-KUSS) album "MACHINE GUN REAPER" I knew as a discerning metal collector that I had to fucking own it. This album cover draws you in with the foggy photo of a gas-masked metal warrior complete with machine gun and reaper's sickle. Luckily in this current age of social media, Luke the owner of Austenitized Records contacted me about reviewing said album and I am more than happy to do so. Ophicvs is the solo-project of the man who goes by the same name (Also a member of Colombian black metal warlords Lucera). Ophicvs plays all of the instruments and sings everything on this record.

So what exactly should you expect on "MACHINE GUN REAPER"? I've spent a lot of time trying to think of an analogy that would do this release justice and here it is. I think Ophicvs sounds like "Live in Leipzig" era Mayhem performing Accept covers. That raw black metal energy gives way to true metal riffery and the vocals consist of guttural conjurings and banshee shrieking. Like imagine if Gezolucifer from Metalucifer got drunk with Necrobutcher and Dead in the rehearsal room and they recorded their jam session? That's how kvlt this offering is.

The layout for the booklet is completely over the top too. There is a painting of Ophicvs riding a heavy metal shark, a photo of a chick blowing Ophicvs, Ophicvs scythe in hand riding atop a hot rod that's shooting flames... This guy is no slouch in terms of creativity. The production on this album is raw with a capital raw. The performances are also probably all first takes and some of those first takes might have been recorded shithouse drunk, but you know what? It works and I'm completely fucking sold on it. Do yourself a favor, drop whatever you are doing and check this release out now!
