Pride Of Lions
Fearless
April 2017
Released: 2017, Frontiers
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: John Haseltine

Many by now in the melodic rock / AOR world of music know the name Pride of Lions. Formed back in 2003 by Survivor guitarist/keyboardist Jim Peterik and Toby Hitchcock, Pride of Lions have been unleashing their ‘80’s style AOR music on the worlds ears ever since.

Peterik is no stranger to writing great music and lyrics. And here with FEARLESS, he and Hitchcock do it once again. And damn it, they are all very catchy and memorable too! Not that that is a bad thing. I was not figuring on personally liking it as much as I actually do.

I was weary after the first listen of the opener “All I See Is You” as it comes off as one of those country pop rock sounding songs. It is not a bad track, but to me, the album starts as if it was heading in one direction, but does not continue down that road. From there it headed in the direction I was expecting. Being familiar with Peterik’s work with Survivor, his songwriting is apparent throughout. FEARLESS is very much an over the top AOR album with not one bad tune on it. “The Tell” is much like one of those instant classics as well with all the hooks and a chorus that after a couple runs through, I was catching myself singing along to. Nowhere near as well as Hitchcock’s soaring vocals. In fact, my sings makes my dog go nuts. It is in fact sad as he is deaf. Tracks “Fearless”, and “Rising Up” are a couple of my favorite tracks as they do lean more towards a harder guitar driven sound. Then there is the ever emotional power ballad “Ever Lasting Love” and the inspirational “Faster Than a Prayer”.

For those unfamiliar with them, Pride of Lions style and sound is akin to the likes of Toto, Foreigner, Survivor, and REO Speedwagon to name a few. FEARLESS is an overall success from one track to the next. I can’t get over the fact that I like this album as much as I do. Even the more Top 40 pop/rock sounding tracks are just too captivating for my simple minded mental state to forget. I feel that even if you are a fan of some of the harder types of rock, do yourself a favor and check this release out.
