Somnium Nox
Terra Inanis
April 2017
Released: 2017, Transcending Obscurity
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

I’ve survived my adult life by adhering to a loose set of rules, one of which is that sometimes you just need to let go and let the music take you where it’s supposed to.

TERRA INANIS is the debut release from Aussie black metallers Somnium Nox, and is precisely one of those occasions where you just have to submit and go along for the ride. It’s a beautifully crafted and subversively passive aggressive record that slithers into your subconscious, directing your emotions in the process like those earworms in Wrath of Khan.

The three tracks that comprise TERRA INANIS are less “songs” in the traditional construct than they are lengthy, independent musical passages that feed off of and into each other, guiding the journey towards their intended destination. At times it’s gothic melancholy in the vein of mid-life crisis Anathema, at other times it’s more obtuse black metal apothecary from the Mgla/Sargeist spectrum, and then further still it’s complete suicidal funeral doom.

Is that a didgeridoo in the background? Mark that one in the logbooks, I believe that might be a first for a black metal album.

Like a stranger with candy driving a van without windows, SOMNIUM NOX encourages the listener to follow them down into the depths, and you'll find yourself willingly compelled to do so. Whether you’re pursuing Satan or some other longing absence in your soul, chances are you’ll find it at the bottom of TERRA INANIS. Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.
