Tokyo Motor Fist
Tokyo Motor Fist
April 2017
Released: 2017, Frontiers Records
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Those crazy musical mad scientists over at Frontiers Records have come up with yet another collaboration; taking the great vocals of Ted Poley (solo, Danger Danger) and adding it to the energetic guitar work of Steve Brown (Trixter). Add in a rhythm section with the talent of Greg Smith (Ted Nugent, Dokken, many more) and Chuck Burgi (Rainbow, Blue Oyster Cult etc.) and you’ve got a hell of a band.

Musically, this is pretty much exactly what you’d expect from these guys: heavy, high-energy hard rock with kick ass vocals. Nearly every song is memorable and will have you signing along by the time the second chorus comes in. Beyond that though, the energy coming through on this record is palpable. There’s an infectious vibe to it that grabs you immediately and doesn’t let go until it’s done. Yes, there are ballads – and they’re good! – but it’s the rockers that shine. Each and every one is a perfect mixture of heavy guitar, rhythm, and “party on!” attitude that you just can’t help getting swept up in the fun.

Poley and Brown are rightly the focal points of the album, with Brown’s guitar cranked way forward in the mix and Poley belting out these uplifting cuts. That said, the rhythm section cooks throughout and Smith is always good for some great backing vocals.

Bottom line: Tokyo Motor Fist deliver on all levels: performance, music, and energy. I guarantee that if you are at all a fan of hard rock or the players involved, you will enjoy this album. It’s only March as I’m writing, but this is a STRONG contender for album of the year.
