Blackout
The Horse
August 2017
Released: May, Riding Easy Records
Rating: 2.0/5
Reviewer: Metal-Rules.com UK Team

It would be unfair to review an album simply with the word ‘meh’, but I’m sorely tempted.

This is the second release from NYC trio, Blackout. Describing themselves as stoner rock, and with what is admittedly a very amusing Facebook page, they go for weird over quality.

They claim to incorporate greasy grooves. I’d have to say, well, not really. They list their influences as “food trucks, museums, frozen margaritas, vintage porn, waffles” but all I really hear are some slightly staid riffs. Vocalist Christian has an exceedingly limited and, frankly, boring vocal approach – it’s the sort of thing that works for bands like Inkubus Sukkubus, but for me it doesn’t really work here. I only just made it to the end of each lingering, sloppy and samey track.

Maybe there are those for whom it really works, they’re obviously interesting and funny people, but I’m really not one of them. Give it a listen if you really want, but if you want my completely irrelevant opinion, just don’t bother.
