Canadian Carnage! Because I am a true patriot, once or twice a year I like to do a quick spotlight and some short reviews on newer, independent, underground Canadian Metal bands. That time is now! Thanks to all of the bands who sent me material for my spotlight. In the spirit of the PMRC, I have chosen a ‘Filthy Fifteen’ (+1!) as some (but not all!) of the bright lights, innovators and leaders of Canadian Metal. Most of them are independent bands releasing their debut album or EP in 2017. Check these bands out, they are the future of Metal! They are (listed alphabetically)…

Abomb (Calgary)

Decatur (Toronto)

Emblem (St. John’s)

Evereal (Mission)

Hammerdrone (Calgary)

Heaven’s Fire (Toronto)

Hounskull (Mississauga)

Ice War (Ottawa)

Maglor (Calgary)

Monarch Woods (London)

Operus (Toronto)

Osyron (Calgary)

Solarus (London)

The Lightbringer (Quebec City)

To The Mountains (Lethbridge)

Votov (Winnipeg)

In the introduction (above) to this feature I mentioned a Filthy Fifteen’ + 1. Votov is the ‘plus one’, the ‘bonus’ band, if you will. This is not because they are listed last alphabetically but because this feature was intended to focus on new bands. Chuck Labossiere of Votov is a life-long, veteran trench fighter in the Metal wars. He has more history, experience and has been doing Metal longer than some of the people in some of the new bands in this Canadian Carnage feature have been alive! However, he does have a new band (sort of) called Votov, so hence they slip in under the radar.

Chuck is joined by his Psychotic Gardening band mates, Matt And John. John used to pay with Chuck way back in Immortal Possession in the early 90’s too!

They have lots of history and the trio decided to put out this nasty, brutish and short release, an EP essentially. The whole thing, including a decent Celtic Frost cover runs 28 minutes. It’s well put together, a nice digipak, with lyrics and pictures and an alternate cover on the booklet inside. Votov is probably the most straight-forward and heaviest band in this feature…Death Metal and nothing more. Classic (old) Cannibal Corpse and Obituary worship. VOTOV has brutal vocals, killer drums, punishing guitar tone and short punchy songs all of them under four minutes long. No frills, all kills!

I’m not quite sure to approach and classify Votov. Are they a whole new band and is Psychotic Gardening now done? Is it a one-off side-project to look at their classic old-school Death Metal roots? Is it an evolution of Immortal Possession and just a name change? These questions keep me up at night. I suppose in the final analysis it doesn’t really matter because VOTOV is a killer record. Only Death is real…
