F.O.A.D.
Birth of Extinction
January 2017
Released: 2016, Defense Records
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Metal-Rules.com UK Team

It's important to be objective when reviewing albums, or anything really, so I try to have a process. That process involves never looking at the track or artist before I listen to whatever it is I'm about to review - that helps to prevent any preconceived notions giving, I hope, as fair an assessment as possible. However, I accidentally glimpsed a peak at F.O.A.D.'s first track as it came up. The child inside me wants to give them 5/5 immediately for having a starting track called 'Avoid The Smell Of Semen'. Hat's off!

F.O.A.D. stands for the subtly titled 'Fuck Off And Die', a Swedish thrash metal band from Västerås. Formed in 1986, this is their first full-length album. That's not a typo, by the way. Citing 'various reasons' it has genuinely taken them 30 years to put out a full album. You don't want to rush into anything, I suppose.

So the million dollar question - has the wait been worth it? Categorically, yes. It's excellent. They bill themselves as 'pure, fucking, Swedish thrash metal', and it'd be hard to argue with that. I also hear a touch of first wave black metal in there too, the singer sounds a bit like Cronos, in fact. Lots of hard driving riffs with beautifully delivered solos, some of which verge on the lilting. Dynamically and rhythmically this shows prowess across the board, too.

The balance in everything they achieve is perfect. They are just the right side of ridiculous and just raw enough to be genuine. The long solos are just the right side of self-indulgent. They are offensive, but without it sounding forced. They are a traditional sound, but still have something unique. They seem to take the music deathly seriously, but not themselves - exactly as it should be, in my opinion.

In short, this is an album that will, or should appeal to any extreme metal fan. If it doesn't, there's something wrong with you.
