It's been four years since Svart Crown unleashed their last full-length. The French Black/Death Metal band has gone through a few line-up changes in that time recruiting two members from fellow legendary French band, Agressor. Guitarist Kevin Verlay and drummer Kevin Paradis join the group on their newest effort, "Abreaction." The duo are a welcome add to the band adding some great riffs and blast beats throughout the album.
Abreaction opens slowly with "Golden Sacrament," which sets tone for the darkness that follows throughout the rest of this album. Svart Crown are not afraid to kick your skull in either. The second track, "Carcosa" is a fast and heavy hitter with some incredible blast beats courtesy of their new sticksman. "Orgasmic Spiritual Ecstasy" has an Enslaved feel to it and is also the first song the band has used for a video. "Tentacion" is a moody and creepy instrumental that feels like a soundtrack for a Western showdown at high noon.
Perhaps my favorite track on this album is, "Upon the Intimate Madness". This track has one of the craziest opening riffs I have heard in a long time. Frontman Le Bail agrees that the opening to this song is "Total Savagery" and explains that the track is inspired by a French movie by the name of "Mon Roi". The film begins as a beautiful love story only to end as a horrific nightmare. Sounds pretty Metal to me.
Abreaction is a everything you want in an extreme Metal album with elements of Death Metal, Black Metal and even a few layers of Doom Metal for flavor.
