“Know from whence you came. If you know whence you came, there are absolutely no limitations to where you can go.” - James Baldwin

We live in an age where almost everything in music has been done. The room for innovation is so small these days that one has to go to great lengths in order to demonstrate some form of inventiveness. Even then, the end product may resemble a bastard child that should not be: a collection of off-the-wall influences carelessly stapled together in a vein attempt to create a niche. Whilst the effort is commendable, it's a classic case of wondering “whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should”. So how about we go back?

THRON are a collection of seasoned Black Forest, Germany metal veterans and on this, their self-titled debut, they demonstrate a knack for harnessing that old-school sound but presenting it with a modern edge. It's blackened death metal that sounds straight out of the early 90s – the production is crystal clear and balanced, but with enough dust to slot in amongst its contemporaries of yesteryear. Mercifully, with this in-mind, the band demonstrably avoid the gaping maw of the “modern band with old-school sensibilities” pitfall – coming across as imitators.

Erupting into life with the fearsome “Purified In Fire”, THRON don't let up. Taking the listener by the throat and bidding “death to us all” through “Mutilation Of The Unholy”, it's a furious, misanthropic record. Yet it's the groovy, mid-tempo stomps that permeate through “Orphaned By The Undertaker” and “Bloodfeast” that add an extra slice of deliciousness to this nostalgic dish.

Knowing where they stand amongst the metal world, THRON have crafted a strong debut of blood and fire that truly would sit proudly amongst their contemporaries in DISSECTION, UNANIMATED, EDGE OF SANITY, et al. To some, it'll feel somewhat familiar territory but it's rather like a return home as opposed to something like, say, the daily drudge to work. Saying that, THRON would certainly help ease the pain whilst going through the latter.
