Final Man
May 2017
Released: 2017, 2017
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

Contaminated is an Australian outfit that plays early 90’s Swedeath, and for the most part, they do it okay. They’ve even got the Dan Seagrave-esque artwork on the cover of their debut, FINAL MAN. But when there are as many bands from all corners of the globe trying to rekindle the Sunlight Studios sound through an HM2 pedal and repurposed Nihilst riffs, “okay” doesn’t quite cut it.

The tunes on FINAL MAN aren’t bad, they’ve just been done to death 1000 times over by more qualified bands. Older tunes like “Co-Opted Into Worthless Sludge” and “No Time to Rot” hold up a little better than their counterparts, but more often than not, the tunes sound like they’re more focused on capturing the vibe of that era than trying to create something new and interesting within the format of that era (see Interment, Church of the Dead, Entrails and a gazillion others). Plus, vocalist Zen sounds like somebody cut out his tongue and made him record his vocals in a different room than where the mic wise. My guess is that it was intended to sound extra guttural, but in execution it sounds flat and comical at times.

Points for effort fellas, and I’m sure that after a few pints these tunes sound great live. But when you’ve only got so many listening hours in the day and so many shekels you can afford to shell out for music, you want the best bang for your buck. FINAL MAN isn’t it.
