Hailing from multiple nations across the globe, French-American-Bulgarian black metallers Corpus Diavolis have just released their third full-lenght album, Atra Lumen. They’re currently based in Marseille, France and the album which promises to be an esoteric, transcendent journey was mixed in Birmingham, England.
Throughout the album, the music matches its promotional description with an intensely dark and occult feel to it. Mystery and angst ooze from every note of the densely atmospheric music.
What’s there is good, but there isn’t that much variation. Composition-wise, the release gets a bit same-y after a while and the listener is left waiting for shifts and climaxes that never come, or don’t quite hit the spot. Touches of a variety of timbres such as piano sounds add some colour, and with reverb a feeling of vastness to the music spicing things up a bit.
Overall, this is a pretty standard black metal record. It’s not outstanding, but there’s nothing particularly bad about it either and I’m sure fans of the genre would enjoy listening to it.
