Eight Cardinal Sins
May 2017
Released: 2017, Thrashing Madness
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: John Haseltine

Hellias are a long running metal band from Krakow, Poland. Originally formed in 1987, they put out several releases before disbanding ten years later. A break that only lasted a few years, sees Hellias reforming around 2003 and have been assaulting listeners senses ever since.

EIGHT CARDINAL SINS, the latest by these sudo-thrashers consists of 12 nicely crafted tracks of metal fury. Nothing that seems to be extraordinary in the world of metal, but from my first listen, there seems to be something very likeable about them. I am not to classify them into a particular genre. We’ll just say metal for now. This is due to the fact that Hellias do seem to cover a vast majority of many metal sub-genres. They offer several fairly decent thrash sounding tracks while on others, they surprise the listener with a more subdued sound.

Many of the tracks have a groove-laden and doomy feel to them. That blends well with the throwback, straight up in your face heavy metal they play. As a newbie to Hellias, I do apologize that I cannot do a release to release comparison for some of you. That is something mainly for fans or those who are semi familiar with them. From what I gather with the consistency of the tracks here, and a couple YouTube videos, if you are familiar with Hellias, you will not be disappointed.

For those who have not heard of the band, you may or may not be in for a treat. There are many similarities to many other bands out there, yet they seem to pull off their own sound. Hellias do their style of metal well. As an added treat to an already good album, Hellias offer up an excellent cover of AC/DC’s “Sin City”.
