Axel Rudi Pell
The Ballads V
May 2017
Released: 2017, SPV
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: JP

As perhaps the biggest Axel Rudi Pell champion of the staff here at, an album of Axel Rudi Pell ballads is music to my ears.

In case you don’t know, like clockwork, every three or four albums, Axel Rudi Pell gathers all of the excellent ballads on those albums and put out a compilation of those songs. This time on THE BALLADS V we get the most beautiful, softest and slowest songs from CIRCLE OF THE OATH (2012), INTO THE STORM (2014) and GAME OF SINS (2016). To add value for the fans the band always adds a few new or rare songs. This time we get four unreleased songs, one of them a cover tune called Overall, there are three cover songs this time including the mega-epic 14 minute live version of Deep Purple’s ‘Mistreated’ from his live album MAGIC MOMENTS that came out in 2015. The original is only seven minutes long so in the spirit of Richie Blackmore, it gets doubled in length to the monster jam size. In hindsight this make perfect sense because we all know Pell is basically the reincarnation of Blackmore, or at very least the heir to his throne. One of the two tracks’ On The Edge Of Our Time’ is a classic Pell, a long power ballad, lifted by the dramatic vocal delivery of Johnny G. Slap on another really cool album cover artwork that pays tribute to previous album covers, add great production, a handful of unreleased tracks, some cool cover tunes; a whopping 73 minutes of the tender side of this superb artist, and THE BALLADS V is a total winner.

I recall a few years back one the of the ‘cool’ American Metal webzines (the one that likes to make fun of everything they don’t like) wrote a very negative review of one of the Axel Rudi Pell ballad compilations and continued on to make fun of the fans of the band as well. Classy! Well, I’m here to say, in reference to their review, we (Axel Rudi Pell fans) cannot be stopped as we will continue to buy his albums and support one of our favourite bands. I proudly own and listen to all of his ballad collections and THE BALLADS V is another crown jewel on his mighty throne.
