Quiet Riot
Road Rage
October 2017
Released: 2017, Frontiers Records
Rating: 2.0/5
Reviewer: John Haseltine

So I’m sure many of you have heard or read the vocal changes and drama surrounding the departure of Seann Nicols earlier this year. ROAD RAGE was already recorded and just a few weeks away from release when he exited the band. Not sure why, but it must not have been too good. In steps American Idol finalist James Durbin. Remember him? He’s the one that got to sing with Judas Priest. Which I thought was totally cool, but not to most Priest fans.

So, I do not remember much about Durbin’s week to week song choices on Idol. He was dubbed “The Metal Guy”. I do remember getting a chuckle at the time. Anyways, the other members decided to have all the vocal parts of ROAD RAGE recorded so it could be released with Durbin’s vocals. So the guy just joins the band and ‘BOOM!’ An album. I have to admit, I have never been that big of a Quite Riot fan over the years. Like millions of others, I had METAL HEALTH when it came out. Still have the original cassette. It was most everything after that that fell flat for me. No other reason than I just couldn’t get into it.

ROAD RAGE. ROAD RAGE. Hmmm. Not to demean any of the members of the band as all have and have proven themselves many times before, but this seems like they are really reaching for something that they cannot obtain. I have given this too many listens to still feel this way.

Each track rolls of as filler tracks. It leans much too far to the side of pop than metal. Rock it is, just a light, poppy version. And Durbin’s vocals seem a bit to “high” for the songs. His voice is good, but for most of the tracks here, it just doesn’t work. At least not for me. Maybe next time guys. Sorry.
