Athorn is a German band which mixed everything from progressive Melodic Death and Power Metal into one album. Their latest album, Necropolis, was issued in 2016.
The theme of "Necropolis" is set to be an image of the post-apocalyptic days and the story of a protagonist who wants to survive.
The album starts off with an intro at first, and then the second song "Another Day In Hell" kicks in with full energy which gives you a image of the things that had happened in story. The energy goes on and on as a metal album should be filled with constant energy, and then drops a little with acoustic parts that settle the story and give a slower pace of the story. The album ends with the song "Of Pawns And Dragons" which symbolizes the start of something new, a new hope.
The vocals, because there are two of them (one lead and following), follow each other perfectly while transitioning from growling to screaming or singing. As for me, my favourite one from this album is "The Dark Breed" because it really shows off that vocal follow up in almost every section of the song.
The genre of the album might confuse a little because it can vary from power or heavy metal to (kinda)slower thrash metal, this is really mainly because of the vocals, but it is also caused by the guitar fills variation as they transition slow-fast-slow all the time.
The music speaks for itself, as this is not their first album, the full mix of the guitar breakdowns, vocals that vary from growling to singing, guitar solos, the banging drums and bass fills make this adventure even more exciting.
As a band who is nearly 10 years old, they delivered a very outstanding piece of music that is worth listening to.
