In Flames

Swedish Tour 2007
30/3 – 2007

Reviewed and Pictures by: Anders Sandvall

When one of Sweden’s biggest metal acts decides to do an intimate show for about 1000 people in selected cities around Sweden it’s a moment you can’t miss so of course I was at Mejeriet this very pleasant evening at the end of March.

The band did a mini-tour that included 8 cities and the show in Lund was the second last show before the tour ended in Ljungby. In Flames still tours for their latest album COME CLARITY and  they really showed that their are currently one of the world’s greatest metal acts.

Before the show the guys attended a record signing session in one of the local record stores and I asked Jesper Strömblad if his side project Dimension Zero were about to come out with any new material soon and he confirmed that they were.

The drummer Daniel Svensson told me that all of the shows had been sold out for a long time and it was really fun to do a minor show with less light and equipment so they could focus only on the performance and the crowd.

It took almost 30 minutes to get in to the venue and by then the young support act Avatar from Gothenburg had already played their first song. Avatar had 35 minutes and after that it was time for what everyone had been waiting for... In Flames.

In Flames kicked off the show with the brilliant “Colony” and the entire crowd literary exploded when the show started. It’s an understatement to say that the band are loved in Sweden, they are worshiped and longed for.

The  next song was “Crawl through Knives” taken from the new album and Mejeriet has a pretty large stage where the band really went nuts. Especially the main duo Anders Fridén and Jesper Strömblad took advantage of the big space, the other two Björn Gelotte and Peter Iwers weren’t that keen to move around.

Fridén is a brilliant frontman that gives everything he has in favor of the audience and he headbangs the entire show. But the entire band made Mejeriet boil.

It felt like the guys had put down some serious work on creating a varied set-list with both older and newer classics. The main focus was however on the newer albums COME CLARITY and SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR ESCAPE.

The set list included solid versions of “Trigger” and “Cloud Connected” where the crowd almost sang louder than Fridén. They also did excellent versions of “Pinball Map”, “Only for the Week”, “Behind Space” and “Resin”. Instead of doing encores the band did the entire show at once and ended the evening with “Quiet Place”, “Take This Life” and “My Sweet Shadow”.

The show ended by then was all of the 1000 people ecstatic, myself included. It was a brilliant show that the band delivered and In Flames showed once again that they are the uncrowned kings of melodic death metal.
